Commissions

Creating custom pieces is one of my favorite things to do as a professional artist. It’s truly an honor to be trusted to create a work of art that captures a special place, season, or mood for a client.  I enjoy learning what inspires my clients, whether it’s a particular place or a poem that conjures up specific imagery, and my goal is to channel that inspiration while I’m painting your piece.

How it works:

In my shop, select the month that you would like your painting to be finished and click “Add to Cart.” The deposit price of $200 is the same for all paintings, regardless of size, and goes toward your balance. I’ll send you a confirmation email when you pay the deposit. Two months before your painting is created, I will email you to work out all of the details about your painting – size and color preferences, as well as any reference photos or other ideas you may have for your painting. We can have this conversation over email, phone, or even a FaceTime or Zoom call if that works best for you.

FAQs:

What is the payment schedule for commissions?

A deposit of $200 is the same for all paintings, regardless of size, and goes toward your balance. The deposit reserves your spot in my commissions calendar. About two months before your painting is created, I will email you to work out all of the details about your painting, including size and color preferences. At that point, I will create a number of charcoal sketches and color studies to present to you. After you review the sketches and color studies and approve the design plan for your painting, I ask for 50% of the total balance to be paid prior to starting work on your final piece. When your final painting is complete, I will email you with photos to make sure you are happy with the piece. Your final balance is due at that time. Once the final balance is paid, I will ship your painting (or deliver locally).

Can you create a painting from my photo?

Yes! Photos can be a great source of inspiration for a painting, and are very helpful for me to understand the type of place you would like me to create in your painting. Don’t worry about providing a perfect reference photo - I would use the photo(s) as a starting point to create the design for your painting. Also, depending on your preferences, I can change the colors, lighting, and mood of the scene for your painting.

Can you paint something for me from imagination?

Yes! I often paint my landscapes and seascapes from imagination and memory with no reference photos at all. This allows me to create a painting for you that is truly unique. I would start the process by having a conversation with you about inspiration, colors, and features that are most important to you to make sure that those get included in the design plan.

What will you paint as a commission?

I love painting landscapes and seascapes, sunrises, sunsets, and moon rises. I do not create exact copies of my previous work, but if you see a past painting you like, I would be happy to create a painting in a similar style for you.

Do you paint portraits of people and/or pets?

No, at this time, I am not taking commissions for portraits of people or pets.

Can I reserve a commission even if I’m not sure what size painting I want?

Yes! The deposit price of $200 is the same for all paintings, regardless of size, and goes toward your balance. This gives you time to take some measurements and think about what size piece will be best for your space. About two months before your painting is created, I will email you to work out all of the details about your painting, including size.

Can you include colors that complement my home décor?

Yes! I’m happy to incorporate a specific color palette. If you send me photos of fabrics, rugs, wall color, etc, I can find ways to work those colors into your painting.

What about shipping?

I ship anywhere in the United States. The cost of shipping is dependent on the size of your painting, so I will provide you with an estimated cost for shipping once you decide on the size of your painting.

Will I have a chance to review the design for my painting before it is complete?

Yes! About two months before your painting is created, I will email you to work out all of the details about your painting – size and color preferences, as well as any reference photos or other ideas you may have for your painting. Then I always begin by creating a number of charcoal sketches and color studies to present to you before moving forward with the final painting. This process allows us to have a conversation about the design plan for your painting, and to agree on a plan that includes all of the colors and features that are most important to you. When your final painting is complete, I will email you with photos to make sure you are happy with the piece. Once the final balance is paid, I will ship your painting (or deliver locally).
