When the sun rises, the marsh awakens. To tell the stories of marsh sunrises, I started experimenting with toning my canvases reddish-orange to create a warm feeling that glows through all of the subsequent layers. I apply many subsequent layers of paint, starting with soft, faint brush strokes on the early layers as the composition takes shape from a scene in my imagination or memory. Then I slowly build up textures of paint with my palette knives. Throughout my process, I continue to ask myself what the light is making me feel, to make sure I’m getting the story right.

This painting is part of my Marshlands series. It was recently on view at the Cambridge Art Association’s Mary Schein Fall Salon Members’ Exhibition, where it was awarded a Mary Schein Award.

Painted on archival-quality cotton canvas, gallery wrapped with 1.5” depth.

Framed in a beautiful unfinished maple strip frame.

Frame dimensions: 19″x25″x2″.
